Poshmark

Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.

Overview

Poshmark is an American resale platform for clothing and personal items, built like a social network. A seller's storefront is called a "closet", buyers follow closets, comment on items, haggle through offers and take part in live shows. The platform states its own role in the terms this way: buyers and sellers enter into the purchase contract directly with each other, and Poshmark is not a party to that transaction.

What sets it apart from Vinted is the economics: there the buyer pays the commission, here the seller does, and the rate is one of the highest among the platforms in this directory. What sets it apart from Whatnot is that live shows (Posh Shows) sit on top of an ordinary catalogue rather than replacing it.

Another distinctive feature is the layered set of documents. The terms of service, the seller policy, the fee policy, the prohibited items policy, and the shipping and live show policies exist as separate documents, each with its own version number and effective date.

Who's here

The only verifiable audience figure is in an investor disclosure: the announcement of the Naver deal states that the Poshmark community numbers more than 80 million registered users across the US, Canada, Australia and India. Note two things. First: these are registrations, not active users. Second: the document is dated 3 October 2022 — almost four years before our check date, and the platform publishes no current figure on any public page.

From the same announcement, the ownership details: Naver Corp. announced the acquisition of all outstanding shares of Poshmark at $17.90 per share, corresponding to a company value of about $1.2 billion.

An indirect sign that the platform operates offline as well as online: it runs travelling events in US and Canadian cities and local seller meetups.

Getting started

The age threshold is named in the terms: the service may not be used by anyone under 13; those between 13 and 18 may use it only with the permission of a parent or guardian. The platform reserves the right to verify account details and request identity documents, proof of address or company information; if you refuse or the details are inaccurate, the account may be terminated.

An account cannot be handed over: transferring or assigning an account to a third party without Poshmark's written consent is prohibited, and selling or otherwise disposing of an account is not allowed under any circumstances.

The storefront

The storefront is a closet full of listings. The platform lists what it gives the seller itself: one-click posting via Reposh and listing copying, Posh Shows live streams, pricing and negotiation tools, closet management through "My Closet Insights" and bulk actions, working with buyers through "My Shoppers", external advertising on third-party platforms such as Google and Facebook, and sales support.

What you can publish

Categories: new and used fashion, new personal care products, and selected home goods, pet products and electronics with restrictions inside those categories. Not all categories are available in every country.

Listing requirements are strict and specific. The seller must describe the item truthfully, accurately and completely, including its condition, defects and characteristics, use their own photographs, and — when using automatic description generation (Smart List AI) — check the generated text for accuracy. It is separately stipulated that the item must be clearly visible in the cover photo, and editing techniques that get in the way of assessing its condition — collages and heavy effects — are not allowed.

Two more rules that are easy to forget. First: the seller must physically possess the item and ship that exact item; listing a promise of a future product or shipping a placeholder is not allowed. Second: price gouging is prohibited, and once the buyer accepts the price or the seller accepts an offer, the transaction becomes binding.

Product restrictions: electronics must be reset to factory settings with personal accounts signed out; cosmetics must be new, with no samples and no alcohol content; aerosols, perfume and nail polish may not be shipped with Poshmark labels; liquids only in sealed factory packaging and before their expiry date. "Mystery boxes" are allowed at the parties' own risk, but boxes made from unclaimed packages and lots with an element of chance are not.

How to grow

Poshmark does not publicly describe its ranking mechanics — there is nothing about them on the pages we checked. What is named outright, though, is what breaks growth.

Penalties for manipulating search results: sellers are prohibited from mass-deleting and re-posting the same or similar listings; Poshmark may limit the visibility of such listings or take action against the account. Penalties for failures: a rate of unshipped or cancelled orders of 3% or higher over a rolling 90 days worsens the seller's standing; cancellations at the buyer's request do not affect reputation. The platform reserves the right to change that threshold.

Live shows are a separate instrument. Only selected sellers may create Posh Shows, Poshmark decides on admission at its own discretion, the host must be at least 18, and they must run the show actively — holding an auction or a discussion connected to sales.

The in-show auction leaves no room for second thoughts: the seller sets the starting price, the auction cannot be cancelled once launched and the price cannot be changed, all bids are final, and the seller is forbidden from bidding on their own item or asking others to drive the price up; the platform is not liable for technical failures, including a dropped connection.

Path to monetization

Poshmark earns from a sales commission — and the structure is as simple as it gets. Listing is always free. After a sale, a commission is withheld from the final order price: for sales under $15 a flat $2.95, for sales of $15 and up 20%, leaving the seller 80%. The current revision of the document is marked as effective from 25 November 2024.

The history of that rate is instructive. The same version history shows that on 3 October 2024 the platform introduced a different scheme — a flat fee of $1, $2 or $3 depending on the order price plus 5.99% of the total, with a separate "buyer protection fee" charged to the buyer on the same formula — but as early as 24 October 2024 it went back to the previous 20% and $2.95 and dropped the buyer fee. If you come across Poshmark profitability calculations from the autumn of 2024, check which of the three schemes they refer to.

Shipping is built into the model: Poshmark issues one prepaid label or QR code per order, covering a shipment of up to 5 pounds; for shipments between 5 and 15 pounds the seller buys an upgraded label, and 15 pounds is the weight limit for a single order. Title to the item passes to the buyer at the moment of shipment.

Money timelines: the seller must ship within 7 days of the purchase date, otherwise the buyer may cancel the order. After delivery the buyer must report a problem within 3 days; if they confirm receipt or stay silent for 3 days, Poshmark credits the seller with the purchase price less taxes and fees. The platform names the withdrawal methods itself: direct deposit, ACH, instant transfer, PayPal and Venmo.

Tools and automation

Poshmark has no public API: the pages we checked contain neither a developer section nor any description of a programming interface. The market of third-party services confirms this. The cross-posting service Vendoo lists Poshmark among the platforms it posts items to and imports them from, but in the footer of its own site it writes: "Poshmark is a trademark of Poshmark, Inc. This app is not endorsed or certified by Poshmark, Inc." — while the same footer states outright that it uses the APIs of eBay, Etsy and Facebook Marketplace.

The platform lists its built-in tools in the seller policy: the "My Closet Insights" closet statistics, bulk actions on listings, working with leads through "My Shoppers", listing copying and Reposh, pricing and offer tools. Named separately is external advertising of closets on third-party platforms, run by Poshmark itself.

Limits and rules

Who it's for

It suits you if you sell clothing in the US, Canada, Australia or India and are ready to work "in social mode": following, commenting, haggling, going live. The platform takes logistics off the seller's hands — the label arrives ready-made — and handles external advertising of closets itself.

It does not suit you if a 20% commission does not fit your economics: on cheap goods the flat $2.95 means a $6 item brings in less than half its price. It does not suit products outside the supported categories, nor anyone counting on automation through an official API. And it does not suit you if you are not ready for the binding nature of the auction: a bid in a show cannot be withdrawn, and a technical failure does not count as grounds.
