Shopee
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
Shopee is a marketplace operating in Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Latin America. It belongs to Singapore's Sea Limited, which describes it as the largest pan-regional e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan and one of the leading platforms in Brazil.
The setup for a seller is standard for a marketplace: your storefront is a shop inside the platform, goods go into the shared catalogue, payment and delivery run through Shopee's infrastructure, and the platform withholds its fees from the payout.
One thing is worth noting straight away. Shopee's own international page still says: "FREE FOR ALL. No download costs, no listing fees, no commission. Use Shopee for free!". That claim contradicts the structure of the business that Sea Limited itself discloses to investors: the marketplace's core revenue consists chiefly of transaction-based fees and advertising revenue. The shopee.com page cannot be treated as a source on fees — it describes a state of affairs that no longer exists.
Who's here
Here Shopee is a rare case: the figures are verifiable, because the parent company is public and obliged to disclose them.
For the first quarter of 2026: 4.0 billion orders (up 29.3%), GMV of 37.3 billion dollars (up 30.2%), and Shopee revenue under GAAP of 5.1 billion dollars. This is data from an issuer's report rather than a marketing statement — but it covers the platform as a whole, with no country breakdown.
The geography can be read off the start page: Shopee offers a choice of versions — Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Cambodia and Laos. Each country version is a separate site with its own catalogue, its own seller console and, importantly for calculations, its own fee schedule.
Getting started
Seller registration is done in the Shopee Seller Centre console of the relevant country. Document requirements, the review procedure and the contract terms are described in the seller education sections on subdomains of the form seller.shopee.sg.
Shopee has a separate programme for brands — Shopee Mall, for which a distinct Mall commission applies, different from the commission for ordinary sellers. That means the platform has at least two seller tiers with different economics.
What you can publish
The requirements for a product listing — the number and dimensions of images, the length of the title and description, mandatory attributes, the list of prohibited categories — are published in the seller education centre and the help centre.
The scale says something indirectly about the breadth of the catalogue: 13.9 billion orders in 2025 with 400 million buyers means a broad-profile platform, not a niche one.
How to grow
Shopee does not publicly describe its ranking mechanics.
What is visible directly from the issuer's report is that advertising on the platform is not a secondary service but one of the two main sources of income: the marketplace's core revenue is made up chiefly of transaction-based fees and advertising revenue, and in the first quarter of 2026 it grew 61.0% year on year to 3.8 billion dollars. For a seller the practical conclusion is simple: the platform has an economic interest in visibility being bought.
The second lever is participation in the platform's programmes. Shopee's education centre states that the commission depends on the product category and on the seller's participation in programmes — for example, the cashback programme, and also that the rates differ for Mall and non-Mall sellers. In other words, your terms on the platform are tuned by taking part in its promotions.
Path to monetization
Shopee does not pay creators: a seller's income is revenue minus fees and the cost of logistics.
The fee structure
Shopee's education centre names three types of seller payment. The commission fee and the service fee are calculated as a percentage of the product price, while the transaction fee is a percentage of the buyer's order total; each type is calculated separately and is subject to sales tax where applicable. The commission is charged on the product price after all seller discounts and vouchers are deducted, is withheld directly from the payout when the order completes, and depends on the product category and the seller's participation in the cashback programme.
The values of the rates are displayed only inside the education centre. The size of a commission on Shopee is not universal — it varies by country, by category, by seller status (Mall or ordinary) and by the set of programmes the seller takes part in. Any "Shopee commission rate" quoted without naming a country and a category is unreliable by construction.
Checking what you have been charged
The one practical recommendation the platform itself gives: check the commission actually withheld against the tax invoice in Seller Centre → My Income → My Tax Invoices.
What the platform earns on
The issuer's report splits Shopee's revenue in two. The first part is the marketplace's core revenue: transaction-based fees and advertising, 3.8 billion dollars for the first quarter of 2026. The second is ancillary services: revenue from value-added services, mainly logistics, of 691.6 million dollars, down 8.1% because of higher delivery subsidies. That last line deserves a seller's attention: the platform is actively subsidising delivery, and that is exactly why its logistics revenue falls while orders grow.
Tools and automation
Shopee has an official programming interface — the Shopee Open Platform, on the open.shopee.com portal.
Limits and rules
The platform's rules — the user agreement, the prohibited goods policy, the seller requirements, the blocking procedure — live in the help centre and the legal sections of the country sites.
The only structural limitation recorded by an open source: the platform is divided into twelve country versions, and a seller works in a specific country — a single "global" account does not follow from the start page.
Who it's for
It suits sellers working inside the countries where the platform operates: the scale is confirmed by reporting — around 400 million active buyers and 20 million sellers in 2025. It suits those prepared to work with paid promotion: advertising here is named as one of the two pillars of the platform's revenue, and organic reach competes with paid placements.
It suits brands that need a formal status: Shopee Mall is a separate programme with its own fee schedule.
It does not suit you if you need to assess the economics before registering: fee rates are not published openly and vary by country, category and programme. Nor does it suit those counting on a single account for the whole region: each country is a separate platform.
