Njuškalo

Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.

Overview

Njuškalo (from the Croatian njuškati, "to sniff out") is a Croatian classifieds board. The format is the classic one: private and commercial listings in the categories "Cars, motorcycles and boats", "Real estate", Marketplace, "Catalogues", "Tourism", "Jobs" and dozens of smaller ones — the full list is visible right in the menu of the home page.

The operator is Njuškalo d.o.o., Zagreb; the company is entered in the court register of the Zagreb Commercial Court and belongs to the Styria Media Group AG media group — this is stated in the footer of the platform's corporate site. The same place gives the starting date: users gathered around the platform in 2007.

This is not a social network: there are no feeds, no followers and no creator formats here. There is a listing, search, a conversation with the buyer and the PayProtect payment service on top of all that.

Who's here

The platform describes itself in the markup of the home page as a "classifieds site with more than 500,000 visits a day and more than 10,000 new listings every day". That is the platform's claim about itself, and the counting date is not given.

The company gives a more detailed breakdown on its corporate site, by business line: Marketplace — more than 2 million visitors a month and 1.5 million active listings; "Cars" — 1.8 million visitors a month and about 97,000 active listings; "Real estate" — 190,000 active listings and more than 1 million visitors a month. These figures carry no dates either.

This is where you should pay attention: the platform's numbers do not agree with one another. The App Store listing for the app, signed by Njuskalo d.o.o., speaks of more than 2 million active listings and more than a million app downloads, while the corporate news item about the acquisition of Dimedia says more than 2 million active listings a day and 1.6 million unique users a month. The same platform reports 1.5 million and 2 million active listings in different places; nowhere is it stated which figure belongs to which date.

There is a separate claim about the business audience: the platform accounts for 80 % of all business clients in the real estate sector — agencies, banks, investors; the news item carries no date. There is one interface language — Croatian; an English version exists only for the corporate site.

Getting started

You need a user account: the home page offers registration and sign-in, and posting a listing, as the platform itself describes it, comes down to three steps — create an account or sign in, tap the "+" button at the bottom of the app's main screen and go through the wizard's steps. Apps are released for iOS, Android and Huawei.

No separate business account with document checks at the entrance appears on any publicly accessible page. For real estate agencies there is an integration via CRM: Dimedia lets an agency publish its offering on specialized portals, Njuškalo among them.

What you can publish

The listing is the main and, in effect, the only format. The platform itself describes what helps you put one together: the camera identifies the product category and shows the average price and the time of the last sale, while an in-house model suggests a price range and predicts how long the listing will live before a purchase. For cars there is a walk-around shoot: turn on the camera in the app, film the car from every side, and a 360-degree view is assembled automatically and added to the listing.

The listing text does not have to be written from scratch. The platform explains its approach to the assistant directly: first enter the key facts — condition, dimensions, equipment, what is included in the price — then let the assistant "smooth out" and expand the description, and at the end check that everything is accurate and in your own tone; you remain the source of truth.

The formal limits — how many photos, how long the description may be, how many free listings a month — cannot be learned from outside: the help pages are closed off.

How to grow

Promotion mechanics exist, but their description lives in a help section closed to us. Only one thing is visible indirectly: the home page highlights the blocks "Preporučeno" ("recommended") and "Super Vau oglasi" — both are present on the home page, which means paid or algorithmic positions do exist.

What the platform does describe openly is dealing with the buyer, and it advises keeping the conversation inside the service: the safest approach is to keep communication in Njuškalo messages; if the other party asks to move to SMS or WhatsApp, that may be a sign of fraud. We found no built-in view statistics on any publicly accessible page.

Path to monetization

The platform does not pay creators: this is a classifieds board, not a media outlet. Earning here means selling your own belongings or your goods.

Money goes through the PayProtect service. The platform describes it like this: payment and delivery go straight through the Njuškalo app, the buyer gets a money-back guarantee if the item does not arrive or does not match the description, and the parties no longer need to exchange account numbers and personal details. The mechanics for the seller: you review the offers and decide whether to accept or reject them, while the cost of delivery and buyer protection is automatically added to the price the buyer pays online. Exactly how much buyer protection costs and whether the platform takes a commission from the seller is not stated on any publicly accessible page.

The platform announced the launch of PayProtect as a step towards raising the quality of online trade; the date of the announcement is not given on the page.

Tools and automation

We found no public API for outside developers: there is neither a developer portal nor documentation on any publicly accessible page. An internal interface does exist — the robots.txt file blocks the path /papi/ from indexing, but that is an internal address of the app, not open programmatic access.

The in-house tools are the mobile apps and a CRM for real estate agencies: the platform reports that it acquired the company Dimedia, whose solution keeps track of brokerage deals, publishes an offering on partner portals and is used by more than 200 agencies in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.

Limits and rules

The main practical limit is a technical one. The platform is protected by an anti-bot system: when we requested the internal help and rules pages, we were served a ShieldSquare Captcha check page. We did not bypass the protection — that is a matter of principle; what remained unverified because of it is listed below.

What the platform does formalize openly is the safety rules for deals. It advises: a password of no fewer than 10 characters combining cases, digits and symbols; do not follow links and do not scan QR codes sent by other users; when selling, give the buyer only your first name, last name and IBAN account number, but never the CVC/CVV code from the back of the card. The platform separately warns that it never sends SMS or messages in Viber and WhatsApp with demands of that kind.

Who it's for

It suits those who sell in Croatia: a private seller, a small shop, a car dealership and especially a real estate agency — the platform develops that last line of business separately, to the point of buying a specialist CRM developer.

It does not suit creators and anyone looking for a content platform: there is neither a feed nor monetization of posts here. Nor will it suit those who need automation via an API. Finally, the platform is single-language and single-country.

Verified data

The checked data this deep dive rests on.
