Vero
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
VERO is a social network for photographs, videos, links and music, built on two promises: no advertising and no algorithmic feed. The operator is Vero Labs, Inc., with a New York address given in the site footer. The company reports that VERO launched worldwide in 2015 and is owned mainly by its co-founders — Ayman Hariri, Scott Birnbaum and Motaz Nabulsi.
The platform states its difference from the usual networks itself: the feed shows only posts from those you follow and from your connections, in reverse chronological order, and the business model is declared to be subscription-based rather than advertising-based. At the same time the subscription is currently free: joining as a Founding Member gets you it free forever. For a business that means: you cannot buy impressions here, but the platform does allow you to sell goods and run promotion in your own name.
Who's here
VERO publishes no audience figures of its own: no registered users, no active users and no country breakdown. The only available measurements are the app stores', as of the date of our check.
Google Play shows more than 5 million downloads, 35.1 thousand reviews and an average rating of 3.2 — that is Google's data. The American App Store shows 1.5 thousand ratings and an average of 4.2 — Apple's data for a single country, which cannot be compared directly with Google Play.
Languages: the App Store lists for the app English and 12 more languages, while the community guidelines page switches between English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil) and Russian (the language switcher). The data, by the platform's statement, is stored on servers in the USA and Europe. An indirect portrait comes from the editorial newsletter: its issues one after another examine the work of photographers, directors, designers and musicians.
Getting started
Registration takes a name, an email address and a phone number. The platform explains the number plainly: an SMS with a code arrives on it to confirm that you are a human and not a bot. The app is available on iOS, iPad, Android and in a desktop version for Mac and Windows.
The age threshold is described inconsistently. The agreement forbids access to the service to anyone under 13, the App Store gives a rating of 16+, and Google Play — USK: Ages 12+. For trading the threshold is higher: to use Merchant Services you must be no younger than 18 and have the capacity to enter into contracts.
There is no separate "business account" with document checks: a company and a person register the same way. There is a flip side — the community guidelines forbid accounts that pass themselves off as a company, an organization, a public figure or a private person, but no procedure for officially confirming a brand is described anywhere.
What you can publish
The platform names the formats in general terms: photographs, thoughts, videos (the section on the social network), and the FAQ adds music (FAQ). Numeric limits — caption length, file size, video duration, number of attachments — are not on the open pages at all.
Content rights are described favourably for the author: VERO does not own what you publish, and the agreement does not transfer ownership of your content to it or to anyone else. At the same time the agreement stipulates a royalty-free sublicensable licence to use content for the operation of the service (the agreement).
What is forbidden is listed in the community guidelines: dangerous challenges and stunts, doxxing, terrorism and violent extremism, cruelty to animals, fraud and false advertising. Tobacco and vapes may not be promoted; content about recreational substances legal in the USA, cannabis included, is allowed, but selling them through VERO is not, and cannabis dispensaries may run accounts as long as they do not trade through the platform. Sponsored posts the author is obliged to mark themselves — with hashtags such as #ad, #sponsored, #partner or a note in the caption.
How to grow
There is no promotion algorithm here by design: the platform explains that the feed should be determined by you and your network, not by an algorithm running on data collected about you. There is no point waiting for viral spikes.
The platform describes the discovery mechanic like this: you join no more than 10 tags, gain Newcomer status by publishing at least 3 public photo posts in each, and rise higher in search as you receive Vouches — endorsements from other members. That is the only lever of visibility described.
VERO has no advertising as a product: the network is declared ad-free, and no ad account exists. The agreement, meanwhile, expressly allows members to promote their own goods and services and stresses that such posts count as user content, not as VERO advertising. There is a contradiction here: the list of forbidden actions in the same agreement includes using the service "for any commercial solicitation purposes". The community guidelines reconcile this as follows: do not spam other people's posts and comments with offers and promotion, and do not approach people for commercial purposes without their consent. The conclusion: promotion in your own feed is acceptable, unsolicited outreach to strangers is not. No built-in statistics for the author are described anywhere.
Path to monetization
VERO has no programme of payouts for views or a share of advertising revenue — nor is there any advertising to pay it from. Earnings are built on direct sales.
The first route is Merchant Services: a purchase is made directly from the seller, not from VERO — the platform does not manufacture, does not sell and is not responsible for the goods, their price, quality and legality, and is not obliged to handle disputes. Payments go through a third-party provider, and the platform's fees are not named.
The second route is CoFi (Community Finance): the company describes a model in which fans receive a share in what they like and are rewarded with access to tickets, content, merch, closed chats and streams, with the assets traded through the regulated Tokenise exchange. Neither entry thresholds, nor terms for authors, nor a list of countries is on the page.
The third route is for musicians only: the company has its own label, VERO Music, with a public artist roster and a merch store; the label does not publish its contract terms. Note a discrepancy too: the FAQ describes membership as a free subscription, while Google Play marks the app as containing in-app purchases, whose composition is nowhere disclosed.
Tools and automation
VERO has no public API: no developer portal, no documentation and no link to them from the site. The agreement is unfriendly to automation — among the forbidden actions it names collecting personal data and account names from the service, and accessing content by any means other than those provided by the platform itself.
What does exist officially is a brand resources section with logos, icons, call-to-action buttons, screenshots and embeddable blocks. That is all the platform gives to outside developers and newsrooms.
Limits and rules
The legal frame is the USA. The agreement is governed by the laws of the State of New York, disputes go to arbitration under the Federal Arbitration Act, and claims for injunctive relief go to the courts of New York County; the same document waives class actions and jury trial.
The platform declares privacy to be provided for: VERO complies with the GDPR and the California consumer protection law, data is not sold to third parties, and end-to-end "zero-knowledge" encryption is not there yet.
The measures for violations are listed outright: removing content, blocking individual features, disabling an account, contacting law enforcement (the community guidelines). There is no way back after deletion: the service is unavailable to users previously removed by the platform.
Who it's for
VERO suits visual authors — photographers, directors, designers, musicians — who care about showing work in a chronological feed without compressing it for an algorithm and without advertising inserts. It also suits a small brand ready to sell directly through Merchant Services.
VERO does not suit those who need predictable paid reach: there is no ad account, by the ideology of the product. It is also a poor choice if decisions are made from data: the platform publishes neither audience figures, nor limits, nor statistics for the author.
