Shopify Affiliate Program
Tool · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
The Shopify Affiliate Program is the affiliate programme of the Shopify platform itself rather than an intermediary network: there is one advertiser here and it coincides with the operator of the programme. The title of the programme page is "Shopify Affiliate Program | Join. Refer. Earn. - Shopify".
The distinctive feature of this deep dive is that there is exactly one source. The whole programme is described on a single page, and described unusually fully for that format: the requirements for the affiliate, the amount of the commission, the click tag periods, the threshold, the payout date and the methods are all there. Seven of the ten verified facts are confirmed from this single page.
The flip side of that same feature: there is no link to the programme's terms on the page. The only contact given is the address affiliates@shopify.com. The general Shopify Partners terms at shopify.com/partners/terms relate to a different programme, and cannot be substituted here.
Who is admitted
The requirements are listed right on the page, and they are qualitative rather than numerical:
- "Own and manage an active website" — your own active website that you manage;
- "Have an established audience" — an established audience;
- "Create original content focused on commerce or entrepreneurship" — original content about commerce or entrepreneurship;
- "Have experience with Shopify or other commerce platforms" — experience with Shopify or other commerce platforms.
There are no numerical requirements for the audience on the page: what counts as an "established audience" the programme does not spell out. The subject matter, on the other hand, is set firmly — the content must be about commerce or entrepreneurship, not about anything at all.
There is no list of the countries from which affiliates are accepted. The figure "175+ countries with Shopify businesses" relates to merchants on the platform, not to the geography of admitting affiliates, and cannot be applied to yourself.
How much they pay
The statement about the commission: "Earn up to $150 USD per qualified referral". Up to 150 dollars per confirmed referred sign-up — an upper bound is named, not a fixed amount.
Next to it on the same page stands "No commission caps. Ever.". Two statements sit side by side, and how they relate the page does not explain — a ceiling of 150 dollars per sign-up and the absence of any ceiling sound like different things. It is reasonable to read this as meaning that the total number of paid sign-ups is not limited, but that exact clarification is not in the source, and we are not going to supply it on the source's behalf.
There are two click tag periods, and they are different. The main one: "We track all referrals for 30 days from the moment someone clicks your link" — thirty days from the moment of the click. The second, much longer, is for a trial store turning into a paid one: "for up to 400 days".
They must be told apart strictly. Thirty days is given for the click from your link itself; up to 400 days is for a trial period that has already begun to turn into a paid plan. The second period does not extend the first.
When and how they pay
The threshold is low: "The Shopify Affiliate Program requires that you earn a minimum balance of $10 USD before withdrawals can be made" — ten dollars before withdrawal becomes possible.
Crediting and withdrawal are separated in time, and this is worth understanding exactly. Crediting: "Shopify issues commissions to your balance only once a month on the 22nd of each month, for the prior month's referrals" — the commission lands on the balance once a month, on the 22nd, for the previous month's sign-ups. Withdrawal from the balance happens on reaching an amount you set, or once a fortnight.
That is, the money for a sign-up appears on the balance no earlier than the 22nd of the following month, and before that there is simply nothing to withdraw.
The payout methods are named, and they depend on the country: "direct deposit to your bank account or PayPal in most countries" — a direct transfer to an account or PayPal in most countries. Separately it says "direct deposit or bank transfer in your choice of 80+ currencies" — a choice of more than 80 currencies.
The caveat is in the wording itself: "in most countries" — in most, not in all. Which countries are not in that majority the page does not say. The programme names no withdrawal fees.
What must be disclosed
No requirements about marking advertising on the affiliate's side were found on the programme page.
This is silence on the part of the source, not permission not to disclose, and here it is especially noticeable: the page sets out money, periods and payout methods in detail, but says nothing about disclosing the advertising relationship. There are no programme terms — where such a requirement usually lives — on the open pages at all.
An obligation to disclose an advertising relationship may exist under the law of your country regardless of whether the programme writes about it.
What the network will not do
It does not promise a fixed amount. "Up to 150 dollars" is an upper bound; how much a particular sign-up will bring the page does not spell out.
It does not explain what counts as an "established audience". There is no numerical threshold, and the decision on admission stays with the programme.
It will not let the subject matter go: the content must be about commerce or entrepreneurship.
It will not release the money to your balance any faster. There is one crediting date, the 22nd, for the previous month; before that date withdrawal is impossible no matter how many sign-ups there are.
It does not guarantee a payout in your country: a direct transfer and PayPal are available "in most countries", and which countries are not in that majority is not stated.
It does not publish a list of the countries affiliates are accepted from. "175+ countries" is about merchants on the platform.
It does not show the programme's terms at all: there is no link to them on the page, only an email address. The Shopify Partners terms are a different document about a different programme.
It writes nothing about disclosing advertising.

How the money works here
«Ideal Shopify Affiliates typically: Own and manage an active website; Have an established audience; Create original content focused on commerce or entrepreneurship; Have experience with Shopify or other commerce platforms». Failing to meet these points is named as a reason for refusal: «Common factors include not meeting the eligibility criteria, such as lacking an active website or established audience, or if your content does not align with our brand»
there is no figure behind the words «established audience»: no minimum traffic and no minimum subscriber count is named on the page, and the requirement is worded in words. There is no list of forbidden topics either, only a requirement of alignment with the brand. The wording «Ideal Shopify Affiliates typically» is the network's statement rather than a hard threshold
source, checked 2026-08-07
there is a review, refusal is possible and the reasons are named: «Applications to join our program are typically processed within 24 hours»; «However, not every application is approved as we prioritize quality and relevance»; «There are several reasons why an application may be declined. Common factors include not meeting the eligibility criteria, such as lacking an active website or established audience, or if your content does not align with our brand»; «You will receive a notification via email once your application has been approved»
whether the programme is obliged to give the reason for a particular refusal is not stated on the page; typical reasons for refusals in general are listed. The robots.txt of www.shopify.com was read in full, 134 lines: the User-agent: * group comes after four named groups and closes service paths and addresses with parameters; the path /affiliates does not fall under the prohibition, and the word affiliate does not appear in the file at all
