Moj
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
Moj (Hindi: मौज, “mauj” — “pleasure”, “fun”) is an Indian short vertical video app. The operator is Mohalla Tech Pvt. Ltd.; the company describes itself as “a private company established under the laws of India” with an office in Bengaluru, Karnataka, while in the app stores the publisher is listed as ShareChat and MOHALLA TECH PRIVATE LIMITED.
Moj appeared in 2020 as an answer to TikTok's departure from the Indian market, and from the start it was built for multilingual India. The platform describes itself like this: “Watch and create short videos, like 16 crore Indians on Moj” — 16 crore, that is 160 million Indians. This is the platform's own claim in the markup of the home page.
The key difference from global competitors is regional languages. Moj publishes even its own rules in eleven languages: English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. The second difference is that from 2025–2026 the platform turned towards short series and subscriptions: “short dramas” and the premium subscription Moj+ appeared in the app description.
Who's here
The platform's only self-claim about its audience is those 16 crore Indians in the description of the home page.
App store measurements as of the date of our check:
- Google Play reports more than 100 million downloads, a rating of 4.0 and 2.01 million reviews; the age label is USK: Ages 12+, and there are in-app purchases.
- The App Store (the Indian storefront) shows a rating of 4.5 with 150 thousand ratings, an age rating of 13+, a size of 283.3 MB and 11th place in the Social Networking category; the app's languages are “EN + 12 More”.
Geography and languages: the app is addressed directly to India — “MADE FOR INDIA”, with content “in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and more”. In its terms of use the company adds an important caveat: “we do not represent that we are compliant with laws of any country apart from India” — it does not guarantee compliance with the laws of other countries.
Getting started
Registration happens in the app: during our check the web version mojapp.in served only a shell and a feed, and no author dashboard opens there. Moj has no separate “business account” with document checks at the door.
The entry point for authors is creators.mojapp.in, the site of the Moj For Creators (MFC) programme. It describes entry into the programme as a “journey” — a stepped path: an author completes the tasks of a level, climbs the steps and earns Moj Star badges up to “Royal Star” and MFC Select status.
The conditions for admission to the programme are named as numbers in the MFC terms: a completed profile and no fewer than five videos over the last thirty days, at least one of which must have been shot with the Moj camera. Videos must be your own and must comply with the community guidelines. Applications go through review, and the criteria are originality, regularity, genre and quality; the decision rests with the platform. If an application is rejected, it can be resubmitted after 30 days.
The platform lists what participation gives on the site for authors: visibility of the badge in the “For You” feed, access to monetization through Moj Live and gifts on short videos, access to broadcasts with battles, a personal “Moj Buddy” manager and participation in the weekly Moj Creator League with prizes “up to 5 lakh” (500 thousand rupees).
What you can publish
The main format is short vertical video. The platform names the length in the app description: “trending 60-second videos” — clips of 60 seconds. The same place describes the second format, which has become a separate direction for Moj: short series, “SHORT DRAMAS IN 2–5 MIN EPISODES” — episodes of 2–5 minutes in the romance, thriller, comedy and family drama genres. Some series are available only with a Moj+ subscription.
Creation tools named by the platform itself: filters, effects and popular audio tracks; the Moj camera is mentioned separately — shooting with it is exactly what is required for admission to the programme for authors.
The prohibitions are gathered in the Content and Community Guidelines (last updated 11 March 2026). The document states plainly that the platform removes content forbidden by the guidelines and by Indian law and may restrict access to an account; the author's intent is taken into account in the assessment. The terms of use list separately what may not be done: publishing material harmful to minors; publishing pornography, images of severe violence, threats, hate speech and calls to violence, or links to them; uploading malicious code; using someone else's account or soliciting someone else's credentials.
How to grow
What the platform describes as a lever of visibility is its own programme for authors: the Moj Star badge makes a profile more prominent in the “For You” feed, and participants get support from a manager and invitations into competitive mechanics.
There are sections about trends too: the site for authors runs a “What's Trending” column with selections of videos, audio tracks and lenses, and an educational section, “Moj creator curriculum”, with editing techniques.
Path to monetization
Moj does pay authors, but not for views directly — the money comes through the programme, gifts and the subscription.
The Moj For Creators programme. The MFC terms say plainly: selected participants “may be eligible for cash rewards”, and the size of the reward is calculated “based on the views and other performance parameters” and taking into account the results of other participants in the programme. The rewards are called variable, and the calculation formula may change. A key detail for planning: 10% TDS is withheld from all cash rewards — the Indian tax deducted at source.
The sanction for breaches in the same terms: on repeated breaches of the community guidelines an account may be demonetized and barred from future selections, and the account itself may be removed from the platform.
Gifts. Virtual gifts are bought with the internal currency Cheers. The Cheers Policy (updated 28 March 2025) describes the mechanic like this: a user acquires Cheers through authorized payment methods and sends gifts with them — stickers, GIFs, banners. An important restriction is written in the rules twice: “Cheers/Gifts cannot be exchanged for cash, or legal tender” — Cheers themselves are not exchanged for money and work only inside the platform. The price is shown at the moment of purchase, and the currency is the one given on the payment screen.
The Moj+ subscription. The premium subscription gives ad-free viewing and access to original series. This is income for the platform, not a direct payout to an author.
Rewards for viewers. A separate Watch-to-Earn programme is described in the Rewards Terms of 7 July 2026. Users collect points for daily visits, for watch time, for viewing advertising and similar actions, and spend them on ad-free time, access to premium content and unlocking episodes. The rules say plainly: participation is granted at the company's discretion and not to everyone; with an active Moj+ subscription or trial period the programme is switched off, because its benefits are already included in the subscription, and accumulated points are then stored for a year.
Tools and automation
Moj has no official API — for publishing, statistics or administration: there is no developer section on mojapp.in, in the body of policies or on the site for authors.
What the platform offers instead: its own author dashboard inside the app, a personal “Moj Buddy” manager for programme participants and the support address support.mojforcreators@sharechat.co, given on the site for authors.
Limits and rules
Jurisdiction. Indian, and this is said in plain text: the terms of use conform to the Indian Penal Code of 1860 and the Information Technology Act of 2000 with all amendments and subordinate legislation, while the company does not declare compliance with the laws of other countries.
Changes to the service. The same terms reserve the company's right to change, add and remove features without notice, and sometimes to stop providing services; consent is asked only where it is required.
Pre-litigation resolution. Under Indian law the platform has a grievance officer; the rules give the name, the email address grievance@sharechat.co and the resolution deadline — 7 days from receipt.
Transparency reports. Moj publishes them on a separate page, but as of the date of our check the latest report in the list is dated October 2022 — nothing newer has been posted.
The Cheers currency is non-refundable and is not exchanged for money — so says the Cheers Policy.
Who it's for
It suits you if your audience is India and especially its non-English-speaking part: the platform was built around regional languages from the start, and it even has its own rules in eleven languages.
It suits vertical video authors ready to shoot regularly: entry into the programme for authors requires only five videos in 30 days, and after that growth follows a clear ladder of levels and badges. It suits those trying out the short series format: Moj is investing in that direction and sells a subscription for it.
It does not suit programmatic work: there is no official API, and scheduling and statistics export are not provided for. It does not suit you if you need to calculate income in advance: the platform does not publish payout amounts, and the reward formula depends on the results of other participants. It does not suit an audience outside India — the company does not explicitly declare compliance with foreign laws.
