Grindr
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
Grindr is a mobile dating and messaging app for adults built around geolocation: the grid of profiles is sorted by proximity. The platform describes itself as the world's largest social network for gay, bi, trans and queer people and dates its launch to 2009 on its "About" page. The operator is Grindr LLC, under the law of the state of California.
For marketing purposes Grindr is built on fundamentally different principles than an ordinary social network. You cannot set up a brand account here: the terms of service and the community guidelines forbid using the service for commercial purposes. There are exactly two legal ways in — the ads manager and the Grindr for Equality social program. Below we describe only how the service works and what its written rules say, without passing judgement.
Who's here
The numbers the platform reports about itself are collected on the page of its social program: Grindr connects more than 15 million users a month across 190 countries and territories. The same page gives the program's own figures for 2024: 130 million impressions of global campaigns, 117 countries, 71 languages and more than 400 partners. All of these numbers are Grindr's statements about itself, not independent measurement; the year is given only for the campaign impressions.
The "About" page says the same thing qualitatively: millions of people open the app every day in almost every country. The interface language of the home page is marked as English in the markup. The audience is adult by definition: the terms of service admit to the service only people of legal age — 18 and over, or the age of majority where it is higher.
Getting started
Sign-up happens in the iOS and Android app. A web version exists, but the home page marks it as available to XTRA and Unlimited subscribers only.
When creating an account, the user confirms their age. The terms of service describe the procedure like this: in countries where the law requires it, Grindr attempts to confirm that the user is 18; elsewhere it collects a date of birth at account creation and applies automated and manual moderation to detect minors. The same document says outright that these measures are imperfect and that the platform does not independently verify the accuracy of the data, including the date of birth.
What the service does not do is spelled out separately: Grindr does not run criminal-record or other background checks on users and does not verify information about identity, health or physical condition. An account is personal: you may not use someone else's, and buying, selling or renting out access to an account or a name without written permission is forbidden.
What you can publish
The community guidelines split content into public (the profile) and private (chats and albums), and the boundaries differ for each. In the platform's own summary: profiles may contain only images of yourself, with no pornographic, violent or selling content; in chats and albums your own nude photos are allowed, but images of other people only with their explicit and active consent.
What is banned in a profile is listed separately: phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, links or usernames in private messengers such as WhatsApp, bank details and links to payment apps. At the same time, your own social media profiles — Instagram or TikTok, for example — are allowed. This is essentially the only sanctioned way to move an audience to your own channels.
There are substantive bans that the platform states directly: profiles built around the topic of drugs (including cannabis) are not allowed; public mention of over-the-counter medication is forbidden, except in the context of addiction treatment. A separate block covers racism, fetishization, transphobia, discrimination by country of origin, orientation, health status, gender, religion and disability, as well as promotion of "conversion therapy". Images of minors are not allowed in any context, including blurred faces and the background.
How to grow
Organic business promotion does not exist on Grindr — it is forbidden. The community guidelines put it without qualification: Grindr is meant for personal use; you may not use it to buy or sell anything, to advertise or represent a business or organization, or to ask for money, goods or services. The list of banned behaviour explicitly includes advertising and sending promotional material for a business, club, event, contest or organization.
The terms of service repeat the same thing in their list of prohibited actions: using the service for any commercial purpose, including advertising, promotion, sending unsolicited commercial messages, promotional material, spam and chain letters, without Grindr's prior written permission.
The ads manager
There is one official route — advertising. The terms are described on the page for advertisers. Formats: a small 320×50 banner, a medium 300×250 banner and a 320×480 full-screen interstitial unit. Targeting is by country, region or a specific city, plus a delivery schedule by day and hour.
The entry threshold is set by budget. The platform says: if your daily advertising budget is under 1,000 dollars, self-service will suit you; no minimum budget is stated. And separately: from 20,000 US dollars a month, a client is moved to working with a dedicated manager, with more flexibility on price and sometimes with deferred payment.
The non-commercial channel
For healthcare organizations and non-profits, the rules point to a separate door: they should reach out to Grindr for Equality for support; official advertising and partnership options are limited, while unofficial promotion through business profiles or sending users links and donation requests is not allowed and can lead to a ban. The program itself describes its tool as free advertising on the Grindr platform for non-profit organizations — targeted urgent messages in several languages.
Path to monetization
Grindr does not pay creators: there are no reward programs, donations, creator subscriptions or partner payouts on the pages we checked. The money flows the other way — from the user to the platform.
The paid tiers are named in the terms of service: Grindr Xtra, Grindr Unlimited and Grindr Edge; a subscription renews automatically at the then-current rate until it is cancelled. What the top tier includes is described on a separate page: "Viewed Me", "Unsend", "Incognito", typing status, unlimited profiles, disappearing photos viewable once for 10 seconds, chat translation — and everything included in Grindr XTRA. These pages do not name any prices.
Refunds are described specifically: you can cancel a subscription and request a refund until midnight of the third business day after signing up; if you paid through Apple ID, refunds are handled by Apple, not Grindr. If the platform makes mandatory changes that cut features of a paid service, the user has the right to terminate the contract within 10 days and, on request, receive a proportional refund for the unused part.
Tools and automation
No public programming interface for third-party developers is announced: there is no developer section in the navigation.
This is consistent with the rules: any commercial or automated use requires Grindr's prior written permission. The only self-directed tool for an outside party is the self-service ads manager, which itself promises reporting on ad delivery and performance at any moment.
Limits and rules
- Age. 18+ only, or the age of majority where it is higher.
- Sanctions restrictions. The user confirms that they are not located in a country under a US embargo and are not on a prohibited-party list.
- Law. The service is operated from the US and the law of the state of California applies; special terms apply to residents of the EEA, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Israel, Portugal and Spain.
- Local laws are on the user. The platform warns that it is not responsible for the legal consequences of using the service where personal interactions are subject to attempts at criminalization or restriction.
- Location data. The terms of service warn that distance can be used to work out a user's exact location and identity, and that geolocation can be turned off.
- Billing complaints. If you do not report a problem within 30 days of a charge, you lose the right to complain.
- Data retention. Grindr is under no obligation to keep records of your account; the service is not intended for storing data.
Who it's for
It suits an advertiser who needs an adult LGBTQ audience in specific cities and countries: the self-service manager accepts campaigns with no stated minimum budget, and targeting goes down to the city. The advertiser categories in the application form are listed broadly — from medicine and finance to bars, travel and adult products.
It suits non-profit and healthcare organizations that are willing to take the official route through Grindr for Equality: the program has its own channel for free placements.
It does not suit a brand that wants to run a profile here and talk to people: that is expressly forbidden by the guidelines and the terms of service, and unofficial promotion through a profile can end in a ban. It does not suit automation either: there is no programming interface, and automated and commercial access requires written permission.

Getting started
there is no application and no prior approval for entry, but what is posted is reviewed: «We use both automated and human review to moderate images»; for violations, anything from a warning to a permanent ban: «in the case of severe violations or repeated offenses, we take more serious measures, such as permanent bans. To ensure fair outcomes, we have a robust appeal process»

How the money works here
earning on the platform is forbidden by the rules rather than merely unprovided for: «You can't use Grindr to buy or sell anything, or to ask for money»; the terms of service say the same: «You will NOT use the Grindr Services for any commercial or non-private use, such as the sale or advertisement of goods or services… You will use the Grindr Services for personal, non-commercial use only in the manner and for the purposes that We intend»
the quotations are verbatim, the source language is English. The second comes from the terms of service at https://www.grindr.com/terms-of-services/en-us. The rules separately list the forbidden ways of taking money: «Sugar daddy/baby arrangements, «gen»/generous, «pay to play» or p2p, findom, paid massages, escorting services» and even «Emojis commonly associated with buying/selling goods or services». The platform has no author reward programmes at all

the only route to working with the platform other than advertising that is named is to approach its community arm, and places are few: «Health organizations and nonprofits looking to conduct outreach should contact Grindr For Equality (G4E) for support here. We have limited opportunities for official advertising/ collaboration with organizations. Unofficial outreach through business profiles, or spamming users with links or requests to donate is not allowed and may result in a ban»
